 Phase III-B Trackwork Begins

Phase III-B Trackwork Begins!

This photo shows the transition from the Phase I trackage to Phase III-B as the Lot Circumnavigation Route begins heading for the fenceline. Of course, visitors will know that to photo right is the Leather Oaks Garage!

Grade Crossing Buildup

The photo above could have been yesterday, except it was pouring rain. First on the agenda, as soon as the track had crossed in front of the garage, was installation of grade crossing material to protect the track as it crosses the busy front walk. The photo at right shows the trackage completed to the Southeast corner of the garage. At this time, the grade crossing material is bolted to the underlying roadbed on either side of the sidewalk. Early indications are that this is giving positive protection to the track, and the effect is an almost effortless crossing for pedestrians and small vehicles. Permanent concrete anchors may be installed later.

All roadbed for the railyard framework has now been completed, but a good photo is not yet available. Photo 8173 gives a hint of things to come. The important lead switch assemblies have been completed (one can be seen at top center of the photo, behind the shrub trunks). Work was halted today to allow the rail crew to prepare more track for installation.

Grade Crossing Reality Check

A work train was sent out along the new Phase III-B line, but encountered difficulties clearing some of the new grade crossings. Apparently, our careful measurements were inaccurate, and the garage-front crossings will have to be re-milled an additional half inch. Tractor Mike has kindly offered to take on this project, along with the permanent installation of the composite crossing sections, which are in some cases showing a distressing tendency to curl! This will allow our rail crew to devote their energies to pressing the new line Northward!
